I honestly believe my husband is bipolar. I mean the mood swings are ridiculous and the things that he gets mad over are sometimes so petty and he just blows up at me. Sometimes I don't even know what to say to him because I don't know if he will explode.
Here are some symptoms I found:
The symptoms of a manic episode often include elevated mood (feeling extremely happy), being extremely irritable and anxious, talking too fast and too much, and having an unusual increase in energy and a reduced need for sleep. It's also very common for someone to act impulsively during a manic episode, and engage in behaviors that are risky or that they later regret, like spending sprees. And in over half of all manic episodes, people are troubled by delusions or hallucinations. For example, they may think they have a relationship with someone famous, claim to be an expert in an area they really know nothing about, feel paranoid (unusually fearful), or hear voices that are not there.
The symptoms of a depressive episode often include an overwhelming feeling of emptiness or sadness, a lack of energy, a loss of interest in things, trouble concentrating, changes in normal sleep or appetite, and/or thoughts of dying or suicide.
A mixed episode includes symptoms that are both manic and depressive. How can you tell if a boyfriend or husband is bipolar?
Google depression and bipolar disorder. BPD is distinguishable by the cycles. BPD includes mania (extreme euphoria not brought on by circumstances). There is such a broad range of these highs and lows and they're different in different people. Some people clean the house all night on a mania, some people go on a major shopping spree they cannot afford, for examples.
It's subtle in some people and must be diagnosed by a trained psychiatrist or psychologist.
I couldn't live with anyone who had any mental illness and would not get help.
On the upside: Many people live normal, successful lives with BPD and depression when they properly manage their illnesses.
If you are scared you need to get help. If he won't seek help and you can't force him to get help than I would recommend you leave for your own personal safety. You can always try to help from the outside if necessary.
As for bipolar? It's a medical diagnosis that a doctor needs to make. It is usually recognized by the major mood swings - deep depression swinging into hysteria the next day or week...
If your partner is acting very erratic - get him help. If it isn't clinical - it could be drug related...you just never know.
I know of a couple where the woman is bipolar and the husband cant take it much longer. She has no ambition, stays in her nightgown all day, doesn't dress the kids or clean the house and is very lazy. They have 4 very young kids so she doesn't work, but he comes home to cook and clean. She wont do anything he asks of her and she has even been caught shoplifting and doesn't seem to care about it. I feel bad for him, and even bad for her, but if she doesn't get proper medication, he will leave her and possibly get custody of the kids. It is an awful condition that causes you to be depressed and even suicidal, but I have heard that if a person if properly medicated it can be controlled. Good luck, I wish you all the best.

Have blood work done also!
I thought I was a manic depressive. Turns out I had Hyperthyroidism and my hormones were fluctuating, causing severe mood swings that I couldn't turn off. Now with proper procedures, I am better than ever. Just trying to say, to check all avenues.
who cares if he's bipolar!
he's scaring you, so why are you with him??
even if he's IS bipolar, doesnt mean he'll get help. at this point, with his behaivors, if he hasnt gotten help i sure wouldnt want to be the person holding my breath for a change.
leave him. get counseling. and then move on with your life.
Hi,
BIPOLAR is the new ';in'; word for manic depression, where the range between their High and Lows is a lot wider than most people. And yes, you can live with it. Many famous people like Stephen fry and Winston Churchill have/had it. Read on...
I've been in fairly hefty senior management positions for around 4 decades and have had up to 500 staff under me at times. I鈥檝e had to deal frequently with many people suffering Depression, so know a little about what you are going through. Depression is far more common than most people think because most people either don't recognise it or hide it. In fact, I think the stats show that up to one-in-five people suffer from Depression, all over the world. It's good that you're getting it out in the open and seeking advice. Just be careful of the myths and here-say, though. A lot of people don鈥檛 know what they鈥檙e talking about and just seem to make things up as they go along.
Anyhow, to cut to the chase - Nowadays, I produce videos, and last year made a 35-minute DVD presented by a top UK Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Darryl Britto, who is a personal friend of mine, and who wanted to squash all the myths about depression, because he felt that very few people thoroughly understood what it is all about. In the DVD he includes an explanation of the three main treatments available. It's purposely in simple layperson's language and aimed at 4 categories of people.
1) Those with Depression,
2) Those who think they may have Depression,
3) Friends and family of those with Depression, and
4) People training in the healthcare sector.

I also have a Blog at http://business-sage.blogspot.com which has heaps and heaps of useful FREE ADVICE about enhancing your lot in life, which you might be interested in. (Some of it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.)
Also I鈥檝e include some weblinks below which are of course FREE.
I sincerely hope this information might help you, and that I haven鈥檛 given you too much text here 鈥?but I felt it important to lever you away from (sometimes) harmful here-say, gossip and myths. You are not alone, you know. Depression is treatable in the majority of cases and it's truly not as bad as you feel it is - you just need to know the FACTS and what Depression is all about, which then makes it ten times more easy to handle.
Good luck %26amp; Cheers
John E
