I was in the Navy from 2000 to 2004 and my husband is still in the Navy. He gets out at the end of this year and our little family (my husband, my son, and myself) will be moving from our home here in Naples, Italy to my home town in Ohio. When we arrive we won't have jobs. Actually I haven't had one since I was in the Navy. Will that be an issue? Will we have to pay several months in advance because of it?Will getting an apartment be difficult if my husband and I are between jobs?
typically, unless you can pay at least a 6 month or 1 year lease in advance, they won't even bother talking to you.
when i moved to a new city and hadn't found a job yet, i found a low rent apartment way below my standards was the only one that would talk to me and they requird 6 month's paid in advance, but even that was contingent on good credit. if my credit hadn't been good then they wouldn't have even considered it.
good luck to you and thanks for you and you husband's service to our country. you both have much respect from me. surely there are assistance programs the Navy can provide you with to help with this issue considering you are veterans? it would be worth looking into. Will getting an apartment be difficult if my husband and I are between jobs?
generally they want proof of income and even if you have a lot of money upfront, you could still have difficulty. i suggest you rent at a longterm hotel like Extended Stay America or other such. i was moving and looking for work in a new city and had these troubles. don't settle for some dinky scary place. i rented a furnished kitchenette with cable for $600 month in Nashville. I think the 2 room suites were $750? go online looking for these. they give discounts if you ask for it by paying monthly rather than weekly.
I was once in your situation. Don't worry, everything will work out for you =)
A year ago I found this organization that gives people up to $1500 in renter or mortagage assistance! They operate in most US cities, I highly suggest you try to get some of this money.

Good Luck!
Credit and background mean more to me than jobs. If you are good people you should have little problem. If you run into a couple of places that ask for the moon, just say next.
And, bye the way - THANK YOU !!!!!!
Erica, thank you for your service. You will need some way to prove monies to pay rent. Sure they could ask for several months in advance. But I'm sure once they've heard where you've been, the door will open much wider than you think.
If not, contact me in Minnesota, I'll put you up until you get on your feet.
Great post! I completely understand your question. Money is hard for a lot of people right now since the enconomy is going down. My friend told me about this website of an organization that gives people up to $1500 towards their rent or mortgage. It's available in most areas, so I think you should check it out.
